NASA is creating quite a buzz on the internet and in the news proclaiming their intent to build a 100 year star ship. It may come as a surprise to you, …….now NASA believes it is possible to travel to the stars, a complete reversal of their past views on space travel. They wet our taste for space travel with a promise that with the right business model and enough cash they can use ion or microwave power to move a space ship though our solar system just like Gene Rodenberry said we could in the 1960’s television show Star Trek. However, if we really break it down they want to build a ship capable of taking humans to other worlds in a hundred years. They are not purposing to get them there in a hundred years just that the ship could be built in a hundred years. Its just a different way to get those who have limited thinking into giving their money to these organizations who will once again slow our progress down. Its the old majic trick of misdirection.Lets see some lesser restrictions on the private sector and some funds heading there to promot new ideas. NASA has commissioned DARPA the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency to study just how this might be done. In a PDF (see link for full story)
Throughout history technical challenges have inspired generations to achieve scientific breakthroughs of lasting impact. Several decades ago, for instance, the race to the moon sparked a global excitement surrounding space exploration that persists to this day. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and the NASA Ames Research Center have teamed together to take the first step in the next era of space exploration—a journey between the stars.
The 100-Year Starship study will examine the business model needed to develop and mature a technology portfolio enabling long-distance manned space flight a century from now. This goal will require sustained investments of intellectual and financial capital from a variety of sources. The year-long study aims to develop a construct that will incentivize and facilitate private co-investment to ensure continuity of the lengthy technological time horizon needed.
“The 100-Year Starship study is about more than building a spacecraft or any one specific technology,” said Paul Eremenko, DARPA coordinator for the study.
