I’m a California rancher. A few days ago one of my sheep (an adult ram) had a bloody circle-shaped wound (about 1-2 inches) on the top center of his head, significantly behind the horns. I just assumed at the time it was from head-butting another ram, but then it occurred to me that it didn’t make sense for his bloody circle pattern to be so devoid of wool, like a burn mark. Head-butting obviously doesn’t make the wool disappear (nor does it result in a wound in the location of top center of the head, but rather right at the very base of the horns). So I searched the internet to find some kind of explanation, and in addition to finding this website I discovered a news story about another rancher in Winifreda, Argentina who saw what appears to be the same thing I see today, “The marks, consisting in a perfect “circle” measuring some 5 cm in diameter, presented in their interior a sort of “burn mark” on the hide…”
I wouldn’t say my ram’s head wound is a “perfect” circle, but its pretty close, and that’s fair to say it looks like a burn mark as well. I just took a photo of it while writing this post. Fortunately the ram’s behavior is normal, and none of my other sheep appear to have any wounds.
